Advising for Incoming Transfers
Welcome to GLBL!
You are well on your way to earning your bachelor’s degree, and probably keen to progress through the GLBL major as efficiently as possible.
Through transfer orientation, SSU’s advising team will get you up to speed with the university’s various educational management systems and help you set up an advising appointment with the GLBL coordinator. In that advising session, you will be able to ask questions, iron out any transfer problems, and get help building a schedule. Nevertheless, we can anticipate many of your questions, and so we provide many answers here.
FAQs for Incoming Transfers
Your GLBL major advisor is Prof. Rheyna Laney. You should see Prof. Laney’s name in your MySSU Student Center.
Prof. Laney's contact information and office hours are provided here: Contact Info
Here is a list of courses that commonly transfer to GLBL:
Transfer Course | GLBL Requirement Met | |
---|---|---|
Language Courses | >> | Language Proficiency |
Human Geography | >> | Cultural Perspectives |
Cultural Geography | >> | Cultural Perspectives |
Cultural Anthropology | >> | Cultural Perspectives |
World History Since 1500 | >> | Historical Perspectives |
Intro to Comparative Government | >> | Political Perspectives |
Intro to International Relations | >> | Political Perspectives |
To check whether your courses transferred as equivalents in GLBL, check your transfer credit report
View these instructions: How to check your transfer credit report
If you believe that you took an equivalent, but SSU’s system is not showing it, talk to your GLBL advisor
Your transfer Credit Report is available to view online. For instructions on how to find it, go here: How to find your Transfer Credit Report
If it isn't there, and you are sure that your former schools sent reports, call or visit the Office of the Registrar.
Lower Division GE
Most transfer students finish their lower division GE requirements before they come to SSU. But, that is not always the case.
Use your Transfer Credit Report to check whether you have completed all of the lower division GE categories. For a guide on how to do that, see these instructions: How to view your Transfer Credit Report
Upper Division GE
All transfer students must take three upper division courses at SSU, with one course in each GE Areas B-Biological Sciences, C-Arts and Humanities and D-Social Sciences.
Several GE courses can double count in the GLBL major.
UD GE Category Requirement | Recommendations | GLBL Requirements it Meets | |
---|---|---|---|
B - Quantitative Reasoning | GEOL 302; CHEM 300 | >> | none |
C - Arts & Humanities | SOCI 431; CALS 351 | >> | Development Concentration |
D - Social Science | GEP 305/6 - World Regions | >> | Holistic Perspectives |
SSU’s Advising Office is the best place to seek help on that issue. As a GLBL major, your contact in that office is Ryan Walsh.
You are also welcome to discuss the problem with your GLBL major advisor.
1. Print your degree plan worksheet and review the curriculum structure:
Degree Plan / Development Concentration (PDF)
Degree Plan / Area Studies Concentration (PDF)
2. Use the ARR to identify completed and missing requirements:
View your Academic Requirements Report (ARR) for official verification of which courses transferred to SSU as GLBL equivalent courses.
- For a refresher on how to read your ARR, view this video: How to Read Your ARR
- On your printed worksheet, check off the GLBL major classes/requirements that you have already completed
- List all GE and SSU requirements that you still need to take
- If you think that there are mistakes in your ARR, talk with your GLBL major advisor about it
3. Identify available classes and times
Consult the GLBL Registration Info Page for a comprehensive list of all GLBL courses being offered the upcoming semester: Reg Info
Build a schedule based on the order of priority shown below:
If a class is not available, not needed, or conflicts with a higher priority course, skip to the next priority. Stop when you have added enough total units.
- Language Course
- GEP 305 or 306
- SSCI 299
- Any Electives in your Concentration that you are very interested in (they will not come around often)
- Any Foundational Courses that you need
- Any GE that you need
During transfer orientation, you will learn how to register for classes on Seawolf Scheduler.
For a refresher, review the SSU videos: SSU How To Videos
As a transfer, you will be enrolling in GLBL major courses immediately where you will meet your fellow students. Nevertheless, it can still be hard.
We recommend that you connect with the GEP & GLBL Student Club. That club organizes events and activities and is a great way to make friends.
